In Europe, common foodstuffs do not require registration with authorities before being placed on the market. However, the person responsible for placing the food on the market must be sure that the food complies with the European and national regulations in force.

Regarding the harmonised rules, the following should be noted : 

• Regulation 1169/2011/EC on the provision of food information to consumers, which sets labelling rules for all foodstuffs.
• Regulation 1925/2006/EC which sets regulatory requirements for food fortified with vitamins and minerals and other substances.
• Regulation 1924/2006/EC which sets requirements for nutrition and health communication on food.
